Mr C M Field, Director of Business and Enterprise, had this to say:
"Every year, Year 7 pupils (11 yr olds) are challenged to use their entrepreneurial skills to make a profit. The challenge runs for 6 weeks and to give them a start the pupils are given £3 as a starting capital. The challenge is to use their starting capital to make a product or provide a service. All of the profit that they raise from the challenge is for charity.
"For the third year running our nominated charity for this event was Edward's Trust. Jeremy Walker from the Trust launched the challenge with the students and explained to them that the Trust was named after Edward Dent who unfortunately died after a long illness. his parents wanted to help other parents whose children were receiving treatment at Birmingham Children's Hospital...
"This year 73 pupils took part in the challenge and raised a massive £924 for the Trust. Adam Pate won the accolade of best 'Male Entrepreneur' after he worked hard to sell his homemade cakes. He said that every night when he went home he needed to bake the cakes, even though some nights he didn't want to, but in business you just have to do it.
"Carrie Eagleton won the accolade of best 'Female Entrepreneur' after she not only baked cakes for sale but also enlisted the help of her mother to bake a huge chocolate cake that she raffled at one of our 'School Music' evenings.
"Other activities included car washing, buying and reselling sweets, chocolates, pops, stationery items and even making and selling gift cards.
"Paul Cowley from AF Blakemore, a major employer in Willenhall, was on had to present prizes and commented on 'how wonderful it was when there was so much negativity about young people that so many of them had put themselves out to achieve so much for others.'
"Jeremy Walker who received the cheque for £924 on behalf of the Trust could not thank the students enough for their exceptional hard work and said that he was proud of each and every one of them.
"As an Enterprise College we aim to develop an awareness of the principles of business and how using business skills can help others. We are immensely impressed by the efforts and skills used by these fabulous young people which have been put into this challenge to help others.
