As related by Sarah Robinson:

"When Aidan our third child became ill with Kawasaki Disease. Phil and I just seemed to get swept away in a tide. There were Doctors, nurses, our families and friends all talking and reassuring but I couldn't hear anything. People were lovely but nothing felt real. My 'perfect boy' was not perfect anymore and it didn't matter how much I loved him he was not going to be perfect again. When we were transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital the tide slowed. Here were Doctors and nurses who knew what Kawasaki Disease was and how to treat the effects that Aidan had been enduring. And... there was Edward House! In the short time he was at BCH we had somewhere to sleep, not just lie next to Aidan's cot listening to his monitor bleep, somewhere to retreat to for a bit, where I didn't have to worry that I didn't look like I was coping.

"We were shown around Edward House by Jackie (one of the Duty Managers). As soon as she opened the door to us, with a lovely smile, I knew we were going to be OK. She explained all about Edward's Trust and we felt immediately AT HOME. I didn't know how to say 'Thank-You'... then... I met a lovely young lad on the Ward who was having treatment for Leukaemia and had lost all his hair. He was an inspiration. he was so ill and yet never complained. He was always smiling adn ALWAYS TALKING! What an amazing 'little star'! We talked a lot. he loved Aidan and Aidan loved him too. Whenever I went to the loo or for something to eat, when I got back there he would be, chatting away with Aidan. Sometimes he would ask the nurses to pop Aidan in the pushchair so he could take him for a walk up and down the Ward.

"My hair was falling out too with the stress. One day, we were sat as usual around the small table chatting when I ran my fingers through my hair and out came another clump. I was just about to whine when I looked across at this young lad and saw him looking back at me. "I'm going to end up with the same hairdo as you" I said, showing him the clump of hair that had fallen out. He smiled and shrugged a shoulder. "Shall I shave it all off for charity" I said laughing. "You wouldn't dare!!" He laughed back.

"That was when I realised how silly I had been. My son was ill and he wasn't perfect, but he is to me! My hair loss might be shocking but in reality it meant nothing. So the decision was made and I it all shaved off at the Clock Towers Shopping Centre in Rugby on 1st February 2006.

"Aidan is on three drugs now and thriving. he goes to BCH for regular check ups and as a family we can't express how thankful we are to BCH and Edward House. Birmingham Children's Hospital saved Aidan's life and I can honestly say Edward House save MINE... with a little help from my inspirational 'little star'!

"Thank you so much to everyone at Edward's Trust... I can't wait to give you a lovely big cheque so you can keep on saving people's sanity - if not their lives"
