Kathryn Palmer's 50th Birthday

Kathryn Palmer and family... and who's that in the background???

When Kathryn Palmer was heading for the '50' mark, she came up with a great plan. This is what she had to say:

"When my fiftieth birthday started looming I thought it would be nice to do something positive and arrange a party! To my husband's dismay and horror I decided to have a 'barn dance'. I've always loved to 'dozy doe' and to make it even more fun I thought it would be nice to have a fancy dress 'Wild West' theme! My dearest friend, Susie, helped me with the arrangements. We discussed how at these parties you get loads of gifts you don't really need (especially at the grand age of fifty) so I decided to ask for donations for Edward's Trust Sunrise, as I am a bereaved parent of 13 years.

"I lost my beloved daughter, Jodie, to a brain tumour when she was 15 in 1995, as you can imagine that was the bleakest and most devastating time of my life and I know that I would never have survived that pain and loss if it hadn't been for the love and support that I received from Edward's Trust Sunrise.

"I have two other children, Shaun and Naomi, who are the light of my life and my husband Steve has become a rock. However, it has not always been that way and I look back to the years when sometimes I never knew how I would get through a day.

"Sunrise gave me hope, it was comforting to speak to and meet other parents who felt as I did. I attended a wonderful retreat in Wales last year (2007) and it felt so good to be able to talk and cry about Jodi without feeling embarrassed and without other people getting uncomfortable in my presence. I just knew that those other parents knew where I was coming from.

"Back to the night of the barn dance; we had a cardboard cut-out of John Wayne wearing a feather boa - in pink!

"We had a fab night and I felt Jodi was there with us. And I know she would be saying: "Go for it Mom!". Bless her heart.

"We raised over £1500, people were very generous and a good time was had by all.

"My last thought is: I feel very enriched by my daughter's life and through her death God has directed me to some wonderful people and new friends, Sunrise being the main support that I received in those dark days."

Thank you Kathryn for your wonderful and moving words. Also many thanks to you and all your many friends who have contributed so generously to the continued work of Edward's Trust.

Our very best wishes for your birthday and also for your future happiness.
